Dollar Tree DIY Multipurpose Organizer & Home Decor | Budget-Friendly DecorGANIZER Hacks

Transform simple Dollar Tree items into a chic, multifunctional piece that serves as both an organizer and a stunning home decor item. This project is versatile and can be customized to suit any style, whether you prefer a farmhouse, modern, or boho vibe. We’ll be upcycling plastic cutting boards, picture frames, and a wire wastebasket to create a "DecorGANIZER"—a combination of an organizer and home decor in one unique DIY project.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • 2 Dollar Tree paddle-shaped plastic cutting boards (or use wooden paddleboards for a sturdier look)
  • 2 Dollar Tree black 11.5" x 7.5" art frames
  • 1 Dollar Tree wooden rolling pin
  • 1 Dollar Tree wire wastebasket
  • 12" x 5" foam core board
  • E6000 glue or any strong adhesive
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Wire cutter or heavy-duty scissors
  • White chalk paint (I used Waverly chalk paint; acrylic paint works too)
  • Paintbrush
  • 1/2" wide black Dollar Tree ribbon
  • Dollar Tree nautical rope
  • Buffalo check plaid gift wrapping paper (or any design of your choice)
  • Glossy Mod Podge
  • Optional seasonal decorations (e.g., Dollar Tree fall sign "Thankful")

Step 1: Prepare the Cutting Boards and Frames

  1. Paint the Cutting Boards:

    • Use white chalk paint to give both paddle-shaped cutting boards a fresh, clean look. Apply two coats for even coverage, allowing the paint to dry between coats.
  2. Remove Glass and Backing from Frames:

    • Carefully take out the glass and backing from the Dollar Tree art frames. We’ll only be using the black frame part for this project.
    • Clean the frame edges and set them aside.

Pro Tip: If you prefer a different color, feel free to paint the frames to match your home decor style.

Step 2: Create the Organizer Base with Frames and Foam Board

  1. Cut the Foam Core Board:

    • Measure and cut a 12" x 5" piece of foam core board. This will serve as the base for your organizer section.
    • Cover the foam board with the buffalo check plaid gift wrapping paper using Mod Podge. Apply a layer of Mod Podge, place the paper, and smooth it out to avoid bubbles. Let it dry completely.
  2. Assemble the Frame Base:

    • Place the two art frames vertically, side by side, and glue them together using E6000 glue for a strong bond. Attach the covered foam board to the back of the joined frames using hot glue and E6000 for extra stability.

Why This Works: The foam board adds a sturdy backing to the frames, making them perfect for holding items without bending or sagging.

Step 3: Attach the Cutting Boards to the Organizer Base

  1. Position and Glue:

    • Place one cutting board horizontally at the bottom of the frame base and the second cutting board vertically on top, creating a "T" shape.
    • Use E6000 and hot glue to secure the cutting boards to the frame base. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  2. Add the Rolling Pin Handle:

    • Cut the wooden rolling pin in half using a handsaw. Sand the cut edges if needed.
    • Glue the halves to the sides of the vertical cutting board using E6000 glue. This adds a stylish handle-like detail to your organizer, making it look like a rustic serving tray.

Step 4: Create a Wire Basket Shelf

  1. Cut the Wire Wastebasket:

    • Using wire cutters, carefully cut the top section of the wastebasket. This piece will serve as a wire shelf for your organizer.
    • Position the wire shelf horizontally across the bottom cutting board. Secure it in place with hot glue and additional support using nautical rope wrapped around the edges.
  2. Wrap with Nautical Rope:

    • To give a polished look, wrap the edges of the wire shelf with Dollar Tree nautical rope. Glue it down as you go to ensure it stays in place.

Why This Works: The wire basket creates an additional storage area, perfect for holding jars, small plants, or kitchen essentials.

Step 5: Add Finishing Touches and Decorations

  1. Attach Ribbon and Rope:

    • Use the black ribbon to cover any visible seams or glue spots on the frame edges. This will give your organizer a clean, finished appearance.
    • Wrap the handle area with nautical rope for a farmhouse look, securing it with hot glue.
  2. Decorate with Seasonal Accents:

    • If desired, add a Dollar Tree fall sign like "Thankful" to the top section of your organizer. This makes it perfect for seasonal decor and easy to switch out for different occasions (e.g., Christmas, Spring, or Summer themes).
  3. Seal with Mod Podge:

    • Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge over the buffalo check wrapping paper area to seal it and give it a glossy finish. Let it dry completely.

How to Use Your DecorGANIZER

Your DIY multipurpose organizer is complete and ready to use! Here are some creative ways to use it around your home:

  • Kitchen: Store spices, cooking utensils, or small jars on the wire shelf and use the hooks for hanging measuring spoons.
  • Craft Room: Organize paintbrushes, scissors, and small crafting tools with ease.
  • Home Office: Keep pens, notebooks, and small office supplies neatly organized.
  • Entryway: Use it as a catch-all for keys, sunglasses, and mail.

Why This Project Is a Winner: Not only does this organizer serve multiple functions, but it also doubles as a stylish piece of decor. It’s an excellent example of how you can upcycle simple, inexpensive materials into something that looks high-end and custom-made.
